Lash Lift or Lash Extensions? How To Choose

I still remember when I first found out that lash enhancement treatments were an option for me. I had been constantly curling my lashes and diligently applying coat after coat of volumizing mascara for so long, it was hard to believe there might be another way. At first, I will admit I was a little hesitant, but after seeing some of the beyond stunning before and after images, I was a believer.

As much as I had gotten used to applying and reapplying my eye makeup, the thought that there could be an option that would save me a great amount of time on a daily basis was an intriguing one.

Now, it was time for me to do what I do best: a borderline absurd amount of research on every single known beauty treatment on the market. Finally, I finished with both a new wealth of knowledge and only one final question to answer. Did I want to get a lash lift or lash extensions?

Both of these options showed magically enchanting results that I could not get enough of and would absolutely love to have to amplify my natural features and make me feel more confident. While they both would give me long, luscious lashes that are nothing to blink at, there were other factors to consider before making my final decision.

Luckily, I can now use my tremendous amount of research to compile only the most important and relevant facts about both of these processes. Consider what each treatment could offer you, as well as your price point, desired amount of upkeep, and the look you are going for. Then, when you have all the information available, you will be able to make an informed decision about what would be best for you.

Lash Lifts

First on the list: let’s go over what exactly a lash lift is. Lash lifts easily made my top two choices because I adore the way they leave your lashes looking. The feathery, long appearance is nearly unmatched. I also really appreciated that this treatment just uses your natural lashes to enhance your beauty rather than applying any new hairs.

Since I have always been such an avid eyelash curler, a lash lift was immediately appealing to me. This process essentially replaces the need to curl your eyelashes and does so for a prolonged period of time. This is a serious time-saver, and for someone like me who values every moment of sleep I can get, anything that gives me an extra moment in the morning is a precious gift.

What Is a Lash Lift?

A lash lift can also be described as a kind of lash perm. They use similar technology in that they each focus on retraining your lashes’ natural curl patterns in favor of applying a new one.

You and your lash technician will discuss your desired curl pattern before the actual lash lift begins, ensuring perfect results that are exactly what you were looking for.

After a comprehensive discussion about the look you are going for, and what your lash technician can achieve, it is time for the actual process to start. You will lie back, close your eyes, and prepare to be utterly pampered. At this point, your work is over, but your lash artist’s work is just beginning.

First, a perming solution is applied to your lashes that make them ready to be brushed in any direction. Next, your lashes are brushed upward at the angle and curl level you and your technician both agreed upon. Lastly, it is time for another solution to be applied to your now-curled lashes. This last compound will keep your eyelashes at that angle, effectively retraining the hairs to curl at this specific point.

Who Are Lash Lifts Best For?

Lash lifts are perfect for those who constantly curl their lashes, who want more time in the morning, or are just looking for a natural yet enhanced option when it comes to their eyelashes.

It is worth noting that lash lifts typically are best for those that already have fairly long individual eyelash hairs, as the treatment only works with what you grow naturally. People with long, somewhat horizontal eyelash hairs could benefit tremendously from a lash lift and will often be shocked at the enlivening and gorgeous results.

Lash lifts are also great for those who want a slightly longer-lasting option than lash extensions that are lower maintenance. While the end result is not as drastic as what can be achieved with lash extensions, this can be an advantage for those who only want a subtle change.

What Is Some Basic Information About Lash Lifts?

Lash lifts are more cost-effective than lash extensions, which can also be a deciding factor for people. Though it, of course, varies depending on your location, the experience level of your salon and technician, and other factors, lash lifts tend to cost in the range of $75 to $150

They also take about 45 minutes to an hour to complete, and the process of getting a lash lift done is also one that many find to be immensely relaxing.

Lash lifts can last for an impressive four to eight weeks, depending on how well you care for the treatment. Best practices for looking after your lash lift are mostly contained within the first 24 hours after the treatment, but there are also some rules for the rest of the time your new curl lasts.

Essentially, leave your lashes alone as much as humanly possible. Keep them away from water, and do not wear eye makeup until after a day has passed.

Lash Extensions

While lash lifts are all about using your natural eyelash hairs to your advantage, lash extensions add new hairs to emphasize your features even more. They are often seen as a more dramatic, show-stopping look as opposed to the results a lash lift may provide, but it really just depends on which appearance you prefer.

What Are Lash Extensions?

Lash extensions are applied by a qualified lash artist in a salon. You two will decide what kind of lashes you want, the look you are going for, as well as your desired lash length, curl, and frequency. Then, just like with a lash lift, you just lie back and get deservedly pampered.

Your lash specialist will then carefully apply individual hairs or hair fans in between your natural lashes. The new hairs will be adhered with a safe and gentle yet still powerful gluing agent. Lash extensions are lightweight and allow for a nearly unparalleled level of customization.

Who Are Lash Extensions Best For?

Lash extensions are not necessarily bound by the length of your natural lashes, which can sometimes be the case with a lash extension treatment. Whether your lashes are long or short, curled or flat, full or sparse, just about everyone can enjoy and benefit from receiving eyelash extensions.

Since actual new hairs are put onto your lash line, you can customize and personalize your look much more than with a lash lift. You can choose if you want a more subtle look or something that will take everyone’s breath away the moment you enter a room.

Generally speaking, lash extensions are associated with a slightly more dramatic look than lash lifts, but that can vary on a person-by-person basis. If you want something a bit calmer, that is absolutely a possibility and should be discussed with your lash specialist.

In short, lash extensions are best for anyone who wants a change in their natural lashes. Whether the change is big or small, there is something here for everyone.

What Is Some Basic Information About Lash Extensions?

Since there is so much more possible customization, applying lash extensions is a more complicated procedure than a lash lift. This complexity leads to it taking longer in the salon, being more expensive, and not lasting for as long. Lash extensions tend to cost from $200 to $500. This definitely is a significant range, but that is par for the course when it comes to such a high level of customization.

Lash extensions take about two hours to apply, which is definitely longer than the amount of time it takes to receive a lash lift. This is because your specialist has to specifically and perfectly place each and every hair, whereas a lash lift treats all of your lashes as more of a whole.

All of your lash extensions will likely fall out between four to six weeks after they are first applied (assuming that you take good care of them), but many people like to get lash fills every two to three weeks to keep their extensions looking pristine. Lash fills are an extension touch-up where your technician will assess the current state of your eyelashes and apply new extensions where necessary. This obviously takes more time and maintenance than a lash fill, but the results are spectacular.

Lashes That Are Nothing To Blink At

Deciding whether to go for a lash lift or lash extensions is a decision that will vary from person to person, and there is no one right answer. Both treatments result in enchanting, gorgeous lashes. If it happens that you try one and are later curious about the other process, there will always be a chance to try it out in a few weeks.
